France face Spain in a World Cup semi-final on 14 July, a first that aligns with a squad increasingly open about patriotism.
According to L'Équipe, this posture reflects a shift since the 2010 Knysna rupture, when criticism fixated on silent anthems and identity. The federation then guided players towards singing La Marseillaise and clearer public messaging.
Expectations have changed. From youth teams, players know they will be scrutinised. A new generation embraces a considered, more open patriotism, shaped by how they are perceived, including on social media.
Since 2012 Didier Deschamps has reminded his players they represent a country above all.
The 13 November 2015 Stade de France attacks gave that outlook deeper weight, and within the camp there is pride in being symbols of unity, of successful banlieues, and of the nation as a whole.
Inside the group, security chief Mohamed Sanhadji embodies that spirit. In 2018 the squad echoed his motto, with Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi to the fore, and Antoine Griezmann urging pride in being French. Kylian Mbappé later trained at Euro 2024 in a tricolour mask after breaking his nose.
Qualification for this World Cup arrived on 13 November. Jules Koundé noted 14 July is also a day of mourning for the Nice attacks, and said the team will think of victims while seeking to make France proud. Emmanuel Macron’s congratulations were relayed, and Deschamps warned harmony depends on results.
