France will wear their light green away strip for the first time against Norway on Friday, kick-off 21:00, in their final World Cup group match.

According to L'Équipe, the colour is drawn from the oxidised copper of the Statue of Liberty, gifted by France to the United States in 1876. This comes in a World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

France opened with a 3-1 win over Senegal in blue shirts, white shorts and red socks. They then beat Iraq 3-0 wearing all blue.

Norway are expected to wear their red home shirt.

France have never previously chosen to play in a colour other than blue, white and red. Their only match in green came at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, when a kitman’s mistake meant organisers sourced shirts from a local amateur club in Mar del Plata.
