First quarter-final pits beaten finalists against African champions

After an interminable one-day break, the World Cup action returns tonight with the first of four quarter-finals. France, beaten finalists four years ago, face their trickiest test yet in the form of Morocco. These two teams met at the semi-final stage in Qatar, and another win for Les Bleus, this time in Boston, would secure a third consecutive final-four spot.

Five straight wins, and a fearsome front four of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola, have seen Les Bleus tipped by many as tournament favourites. But a narrow win over a tough-tackling Paraguay side - decided by a Mbappe penalty - has prompted whispers of concern ahead of facing the African champions.

Morocco have nothing to lose yet plenty of reasons to be positive heading into tonight’s game. The seventh-best team in the world, according to the FIFA world rankings are unbeaten in 10 straight games since losing in the final of - and then being awarded - the Africa Cup of Nations final.
