European giants clash in first World Cup semi-final

France take on Spain this evening in the first of this summer’s World Cup semi-finals. Les Bleus, the defeated finalists from four years ago, have won every game they have played in north America so far, and they were heavily-fancied before the start of the competition to go all the way. Spain, the European champions, were surprisingly held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opening match in Group H.

Luis de la Fuente’s side have grown into this tournament, topping their group with wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, before swatting Austria aside in the first knockout round. They eked past Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the last 16, before dispatching of Belgium late on in the quarter-finals to book their place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas this evening.
