Francis Abu is recovering quicker than first feared after suffering a double fracture while on Ghana duty in November, and a competitive return is now on the horizon for Toulouse.

L'Équipe reports that Abu broke his right tibia and fibula on 14 November in a 0-2 friendly defeat to Japan in Japan, and that the initial outlook suggested a long lay-off likely to end his season. Three months on, his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule and he can play again before the campaign ends.

In early January he had already resumed certain indoor exercises and was present each day with the group.

To cover his absence, Toulouse brought in Demba Diop on loan from Strasbourg.

Abu, aged 24, has managed only eight appearances since joining from Cercle Bruges last summer, having arrived with a calf problem. The Ghana international has seven caps.

On Wednesday he watched from the Stadium stands as Toulouse beat Amiens 1-0 to reach the Coupe de France quarter-finals. Seated alongside fellow absentees Charlie Cresswell, Frank Magri, Dayann Methalie and Ilyas Azizi, he left without crutches and with no obvious discomfort.
