Francisco Ortega’s return to Argentina is complete.

River Plate formally confirmed the left-back’s arrival on Thursday evening after the player passed his medical examination. Olympiacos subsequently marked the end of his three-year spell with a public farewell. The transfer closes one question and intensifies another.

Olympiacos have converted an unsettled starter into a recoverable transfer fee with positive Net Book Value. They have also removed an experienced left-back during Champions League qualification without yet announcing his replacement.

Ortega’s desire to return to Argentina shaped the negotiation.

Once River established themselves as a serious buyer and the player made his preference clear, Olympiacos faced a choice between maximizing every final euro or completing an orderly separation.

That decision reduced the risk of carrying an unhappy player through the final weeks of the transfer window. It also released salary space and broadly recovered the investment made when Ortega arrived from Vélez.

The reported €5 million is not a transformative windfall, but it represents a reasonable exit for a player who wanted to leave and whose replacement was already being discussed.

The concern is not the sale itself. It is the calendar.

Olympiacos are preparing for a decisive Champions League second leg against NEC Nijmegen after a first match in which the team struggled to control transitions and create sustained attacking width. Ortega was already unavailable for that tie, so the official announcement does not alter José Luis Mendilibar’s immediate selection.

It does confirm that there is no possibility of reintegration. Onyemaechi must either start in Nijmegen or Olympiacos must complete, register and rapidly prepare another left-back under significant time pressure.

Francisco Moura appears to be the most concrete current target. Portuguese reporting says Olympiacos are attempting to structure a loan with a purchase mechanism, while Porto’s valuation remains a negotiating obstacle.

That profile would provide established attacking production.

Other candidates offer different qualities: greater interior play, lower cost, more development potential or stronger transition defending. Olympiacos cannot simply ask whether the incoming player is individually talented.

They must determine how he complements:

Ortega’s departure creates freedom to improve the role. It also creates the risk of weakening it through delay.

River acquire a player with a different level of experience

River are receiving a more complete defender than the one who left Argentina in 2023. Ortega played through domestic title pressure, European knockout football and the tactical demands of a team expected to dominate possession while defending high up the pitch.

He remains most effective when allowed to attack forward, overlap and deliver from advanced positions.

His challenge at River will be balancing that aggression with the defensive demands of Argentine football, where transitions can be less predictable and matches frequently become more physically fragmented.
