Franco Baresi, AC Milan’s emblematic captain, died on 31 July aged 66. According to L'Équipe, the municipality declared a day of mourning as hundreds gathered at the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio on 4 August 2026 to honour him.
On a sunny late morning, the Lombard capital moved at a gentle pace, its usual bustle subdued by summer. One central district, however, stirred with purpose.
From dawn, mourners filed towards Sant'Ambrogio, a short walk from the Duomo, to pay their respects.
Baresi was AC Milan’s captain and symbolic leader, one of the game’s greatest defenders. He is remembered for class, talent and humility.
His red and black number 6 shirt remains an enduring emblem for the club and its supporters.
