Manchester United fan Frank Ilett vowed in October 2024 not to cut his hair until the Red Devils won five in a row, and 500 days on he still has not visited the barbers. His sizeable Afro is drawing plenty of attention.

According to Superdeporte, United briefly looked set to end the wait under Rubén Amorim, with three straight wins over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, then a lead against Nottingham Forest before Forest turned it around late, meaning the Wolves match reset the count. Now, with Carrick in the dugout, they have four victories and chase a fifth against West Ham, coached by former Valencia man Nuno with Paco Jémez as his assistant.

Valencia fans have asked how long the wait would be if Ilett followed their club. The future cannot be predicted, but it hardly looks imminent. Across 12 seasons of the Meriton era, Valencia have managed such a run only three times, and one required two Copa del Rey ties against lower-tier opponents.

Counting all competitions, the most recent five-win sequence came in 21/22 under José Bordalás, beating Utrillas, Celta, Elche, Arenteiro and Levante UD. That derby triumph was on 20 December 2021, so 1,514 days have elapsed, or 4 years, 1 month and 22 days. At an average growth of 1.25 cm per month, hair would have grown roughly 61 cm.
