Jay Stansfield was the subject of Premier League transfer speculation in the summer

Birmingham City's club-record signing, Jay Stansfield, has been under the spotlight ever since his permanent switch from Fulham was completed in August 2024.

Blues, of course, broke a plethora of records in their one and only season back in League One in 2024/25, but one of the main headlines from that particular campaign was the recapture of the forward from Craven Cottage given their divisional status at the time, as well as the interest in Stansfield from clubs higher in the pyramid.

The West Midlands club have become one of the most talked-about in the EFL under the ownership of Knighthead Capital Management, who have been able to use their short and long-term ambitions in this part of the world to lure several high-profile names to St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

It still hasn't been the smoothest of rides under Chris Davies, with the Birmingham manager splitting opinions at various points of his two-year tenure, especially after a 10th-placed finish last season and a continuation of hefty investment from the boardroom.

Stansfield has become the 'poster boy' of the Knighthead rebuild, though, but it must be said that, after the most recent transfer window, Coventry City are one of a select number of Premier League clubs who may have dodged a transfer bullet.

Stansfield, 23, like Davies, has split opinion in recent months for his performances in B9, even if he is simultaneously seen as a modern-day 'cult' figure.

The England youth international caught the eye with 12 goals in Birmingham's relegation season of 2023/24 on loan from the West London side, before the club shelled out north of £15m for his permanent signing on a seven-year contract.

Stansfield later admitted that he required psychological help to deal with the hefty pressure on his shoulders the following campaign, but still delivered 24 goals in all competitions as Davies' side coasted to the League One title.

Last season saw the Tiverton-born man struggle for form despite hitting a double-figure tally of goal contributions, with only two of those coming from December 2025 onwards, leaving sections of the fanbase casting doubts over his performances, even if, at times, Stansfield was being utilised out of position.

Despite enduring an indifferent run of form in 2025/26, that didn't stop Birmingham's most prized asset from being the subject of intense transfer speculation throughout the summer.

Indeed, all three newly-promoted sides in the form of Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City, were credited with interest, as well as Everton and Sunderland.

With links surfacing between Stansfield and the Sky Blues, it was suggested that Blues would have been 'willing' to entertain offers for the forward's services, although it would have likely needed to have trumped the hefty fee which they parted with themselves two years ago.

That said, there were question marks over whether Stansfield could currently hit the heights at the top level, and his current performance levels will have some feeling that the aforementioned clubs have dodged a bullet.

Stansfield revealed that he would be going nowhere in the summer window, which would have pleased the likes of Davies and Tom Wagner, who are hoping to return Birmingham to the Premier League sooner rather than later.

The start of the current campaign hasn't exactly been stellar by the forward's standards, though, with an exception being his role in the 2-2 draw with Wolves on September 6th, during which he netted his first goal of the Championship season with a fine volley past Jose Sa.

Some would argue that a tally of four big chances missed proves that Stansfield is still getting into the right areas, especially after moving back into the '10' role after featuring on the left-wing against Sheffield United and Bristol City,.

However, many will also feel that a striker of such high potential, as well as his prior exploits at the level, should be putting more chances away, whilst also providing for his attacking colleagues on a much more regular basis.

Stansfield admitted in April that his goal return last term wasn't what he desired pre-season, but was pleased with the "faith" shown in him by Davies to persist with him in team selections whilst featuring in a new position.

A similar fate has ensued in the current campaign's early weeks, even if Birmingham have made an encouraging start overall, but the forward, naturally, will be judged on his goal return between now and May above all else, especially with the club's lofty ambitions.
