Frank Lampard provoked Southampton supporters after Coventry City's match on Saturday, prompting a brief on-pitch flare-up.

Sky Sports reports that Lampard later said he was simply showing his emotions.

The Championship leaders took a 1-1 draw at Southampton despite the 47th-minute dismissal of Jay Dasilva.

After the final whistle, Lampard set off on a lap of honour, which riled the home end and saw several Saints players try to confront him.

Staff and players from Coventry City entered the pitch, tempers rose and it nearly came to blows, before Lampard resumed his celebrations.

He added that he had been heavily insulted in the closing minutes, apologised for his own language, and suggested the home fans might consider apologising too.
