Thomas Frank insists that he would like for Tottenham to agree a new contract with defender Micky van de Ven, but is unsure whether talks are progressing as of yet.

The Dutchman has been a very important member of Frank’s team this season starting 21 matches and even captaining the side on multiple occasions.

Many reports have suggested that van de Ven could be leaving Spurs for Liverpool this summer and Frank was asked whether there have been any talks about the defender extending his contract at Spurs.

“That I don’t know, if I’m honest,” he answered. “But he’s definitely a player we should prioritise.

“For me, Micky is a key player for this team and this club, and hopefully for many years to come.”

“I think he’s got everything it takes to be an even better player, and I have no doubt he can help us to get to where we want to be in the future.”

Amid those reports that van de Ven could be looking to leave the club, his manager was asked whether the 24-year-old is happy at Spurs.

“I’ve just seen Micky today,” Frank answered. “He seems very happy, smiling. He was very happy after the game that we won when he was in the changing room after the game.

“Micky’s an excellent player; he’s a fantastic ambassador for this club.

“He’s having, potentially, his best season so far. He’s fit, he’s strong, good defensively, he’s growing as a leader, scoring goals as well, and he’s a very important player for us this season and for the future.”

Not only has the defender been a big part of Spurs conceding zero home goals in the Champions league so far, but he also has been important in front of goal for Spurs as well. In all competitions the Dutch international has six goals including a very special one against Copenhagen when he slotted home after running the length of the pitch.

Frank recognised van de Ven’s importance to the club.

“He’s very important for us,” he said. “Micky’s a Tottenham player now and for the future.”
