Sweden manager Graham Potter announced his 26-man Sweden squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 12 May and, to the surprise of many, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson was a noticeable absentee.
“This decision is simply explicable from a sporting perspective,” said Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche. “Hugo has developed at the highest level over the past few years, consistently delivered strong performances and is one of the absolute key players in our team.”
He added: “34 competitive matches this season speak for themselves. Anyone who ignores such performances sends a wrong message to every professional who works hard for everything week after week.
“For us it’s clear: Hugo more than deserves a nomination. This decision is not only incomprehensible, but in our view is simply wrong.”
Daniel Svensson (Borussia Dortmund), Mattias Svanberg (Wolfsburg) and Eric Smith (St. Pauli) are among the Bundesliga players nominated by Potter, while Alexander Bernhardsson (Holstein Kiel) has also been called upon.
