In their first game since Dino Toppmöller's dismissal, Eintracht Frankfurt flew to Baku for a Champions League meeting with Qarabağ FK. In what was a must-win game for both sides, the Hessen club slumped to a 3-2 defeat ending their dreams of progressing to the knockouts.
Under the tutelage of interim coach Dennis Schmitt, life couldn't have gotten off to a worse start in Azerbaijan. Elvin Jafarguliyev and Abdella Zoubir combined to find Camilo Duran who bundled home the opening goal inside 4 minutes.
Fortunately for the Hessen club - who didn't touch down in Baku until around 10pm local time yesterday - found a quick response. Can Uzun won possession in an advanced area, curling into the lower-left corner from 16 yards.
The Turkish talent tried his luck from a similar distance minutes later, but this time Mateusz Kochalski was equal to the effort. Ritsu Dōan also poked wide from a neat Hugo Larsson cross approaching the 30-minute mark.
Qarabağ ended the half on the front foot with two great chances in quick succession. Kauã Santos pulled off a sublime save to tip Duran's shot past the post, while Nathaniel Brown did well to deflect Leandro Andrade's effort over the bar.
Injury breaks were the central theme in the early second-half exchanges. Brown caught his studs in the sub-zero surface jarring his right knee, while Rasmus Kristensen also required treatment after a clash with Jafarguliyev.
With a lot of the line for both sides, chances were limited as the game adopted a cagey rhythm. It took a quick break on 65 minutes for Frankfurt to register their next shot on target - albeit a tame one from Dōan in the end.
Once again, both teams would score in quick succession with 15 minutes remaining. Bahlul Mustafazada's foul on Ansgar Knauff led to a penalty. Up stepped substitute Farès Chaïbi to drill the spot kick into the right corner.
However, Qarabağ had the perfect antidote to make it 2-2 just three minutes later. Once again, Frankfurt's frail rearguard was exposed as Jafarguliyev fired a sharp cross into the six-yard box from which Duran tapped in.
With time of the essence, both teams started to throw the proverbial kitchen sink at eachother. Momentum only seemed to favour the hosts, striking with seconds remaining – Mustafazada netting an injury-time goal to eliminate Frankfurt from Champions League progression.
