The top-of-the-table clash between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern was the headline story in matchday six of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Elsewhere, there was the first-ever Nordderby in the Women’s top league, and big wins for SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen.
The famous derby between Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen will return to Bundesliga in early December. Meanwhile, it was played for the first time in the Frauen-Bundesliga at the Weserstadion. The hosts beat the newly-promoted team 2-0 to increase their points tally to double-digits.
Larissa Mühlhaus scored the goals from penalty kicks, with both decisions resulting from handballs in HSV’s box. Apart from a spectacular effort by the half-time substitute Mária Mikolajová, Bremen were in full control of the game.
However, Montenegrin international Medina Dešić caused controversy at the end of the game by displaying a sign that mocks Hamburg’s crest. The former Leipzig and Nürnberg striker later apologized for the flag she was handed by a fan. On a positive note, a club record 37,000 fans attended the derby at Weserstadion.
Bayer Leverkusen are the other big winners on matchday six. Goals in the last fifteen minutes from Loreen Bender and Vanessa Fudalla helped Roberto Pätzold’s team to an away win in Hoffenheim. Leverkusen have the chance to reduce the gap with league leaders Bayern to a single point if they beat neighbours Köln on Thursday.
The matchday five encounter had to be postponed due to faulty floodlights, and it will be replayed in full, nullifying Köln’s 1-0 lead. Britta Carlson’s team came from behind to beat Union Berlin on Sunday in an all-action first-half that also had them miss a penalty-kick.
Yet, that wasn’t the best come-from-behind victory in the lively weekend of women’s football in Germany. First, Freiburg took all three points against Eintracht Frankfurt after going behind twice in the game. Including the winner from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, half-time substitute Selina Vobian scored a brace for the overachieving hosts.
Frankfurt will play the return leg of their UEFA Women's Europa Cup tie against Slovácko on Wednesday. The Frauen-Bundesliga side won the home leg 4-0, but that wasn’t a comfortable lead in 2. Frauen-Bundesliga last Sunday.
With only five minutes left in the first-half, Mainz were leading Stuttgart 4-0. Somehow, the only unbeaten side in the division roared back to win the game 5-4. A comical own-goal by Yurina Imai started the dramatic comeback, and 18-year-old Rosa Rueckert finished it with a spectacular effort in the 95th minute.
Stuttgart are second in the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga standings behind SC Sand. Nürnberg were one of the three teams to get promoted from the second-tier last summer, and they finally recorded their first Bundesliga win with a 3-2 scoreline away at winless Carl Zeiss Jena. SGS Essen are the only other team yet to test victory this season as they were defeated 2-1 in Leipzig in the opening fixture of matchday six.
