Frédéric Arpinon said FC Metz’s ordeal did not begin this spring, arguing the problems trace back to last season, as the promoted club edge towards an immediate return to Ligue 2.
A 1-3 defeat to Paris FC on Sunday was Metz’s 21st loss of the Ligue 1 campaign and extended their run to 18 league games without a win, with 14 defeats and 4 draws. Relegation could be sealed next Sunday if they slip again at Le Havre. As reported by L'Équipe, Arpinon maintained before kick-off that he still believed, but accepted little was breaking their way.
The sporting director, in post since June 2024, said the slide started last term. Metz went up via the play-offs after missing the top two in Ligue 2, then endured a difficult pre-season and a rough start to the league. Their only three victories came in succession between late October and early November.
Amid recent speculation over his future, Arpinon said he will do everything he can while in the role. He added he would step aside if that served the club, while stressing he would not give up.
He defended president since 2009, Bernard Serin, after banners and a tifo from supporters targeted him, saying the criticism pained him and that Serin did not deserve it. Arpinon closed by saying he is not worried about Metz’s sporting future.
