Celtic were last night drawn against theRangers in the Scottish Cup quarter-final with the match being played at Ibrox probably on Sunday 8 March, a week after we visit Ibrox on Scottish Premiership duties…

Celtic will be in line for a significantly expanded away section for the cup-tie at Ibrox following the two sides being drawn against each other in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

Both sides booked their place in the last eight over the weekend. Celtic needed extra time to overcome Dundee after the Dens Park side came within seconds of knocking Martin O’Neill’s men out of the competition. The fightback shows plenty of promise that Celtic’s name is on the cup – let’s hope so anyway.

The Ibrox club cruised past Queen’s Park with a convincing 8-0 win over the struggling bottom of the Championship outfit who couldn’t repeat their win at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last season.

The draw has set up a high-profile derby clash at Ibrox on March 7 or 8, with O’Neill’s side set to make the short trip across Glasgow. However, the visiting support could be far larger than usual for the fixture.

Since the return of away fans to Glasgow Derby matches last season, Celtic have typically received around 2,000 tickets for league encounters at Ibrox. That figure reflects the standard five per cent away allocation for Premiership games.

Under Scottish Cup regulations, though, visiting clubs are entitled to request up to 20 per cent of the stadium’s capacity, which could see Celtic press for 10,000 tickets – subject to approval from both clubs and Police Scotland.

A similar scenario unfolded last year when Hibernian negotiated a much larger allocation for their quarter-final tie at Celtic Park.

Initially offered around 2,600 tickets, Hibs later confirmed they had secured over 7,000 tickets following discussions, representing a substantial increase on their usual league entitlement.

At the end of February into the start of March, the Hoops now face a punishing stretch of fixtures, with two trips to Ibrox and away matches in Stuttgart and at Pittodrie all compressed into a challenging 10-day period.

Celtic return to action on Wednesday night against bottom of the league Livingston at Celtic Park. A trip to Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon follows Livi.

It’s imperative that there is a resolution to the stand-off between the club and the support which resulted in the boycott of the cup-tie against Dundee by thousands of Celtic supporters.

Brian Wilson’s gaslighting of the Celtic support last week was unhelpful. He has to reach out to the Celtic Fans Collective and meet with them as soon as possible this week.

Celtic is about to enter a season defining period. Martin O’Neill has called for a resolution and the Celtic Fans Collective are prepared to meet with the Celtic interim chairman and have been from the day he replaced Peter Lawwell in the job.

Hopefully that happens this week and the Celtic family can unite for the significant challenges ahead.
