Free-flowing United respond in perfect style with 5-2 demolition of Ipswich: Match Report | OneFootball

Manchester United welcomed Ipswich Town to Old Trafford for their first home game of the season.

First half

The first five minutes went by with little drama as the game started with a lull.

After 6 minutes, the ball broke to Rashford and he took a shot but his leg distance effort was blocked and looped into the hands of the Ipswich keeper.

Shortly after, Rashford ran through the wing, he cut the ball back to Matheus Cunha but the Brazilian drilled the ball harmlessly over the bar.

United had a little save when Daizen Maeda broke down the left wing, leaving Bryan Mbeumo for dead but his cross went right into Senne Lammens’ hands.

The home side had their best chance when the ball broke to Mbeumo in the box and he set up Diogo Dalot who cut in and hit a great left footed strike but it was well stopped by Kjell Scherpen.

Julio Enciso broke up the pitch and beat Luke Shaw and Mbeumo in a foot race but luckily Lammens stopped his goal bound effort.

United raced forward and Cunha’s ball across the goal was just out of reach of Rashford.

Maizen caused United problems again when he got in behind the defence but Lammens got a good hand to the effort to put it out for a corner.

Disaster struck again for the home side when Shaw was beaten all ends up pace for pace by Abdul Fatawu and he picked out an unmarked Leif Davis who fired the ball into the net beyond a helpless Lammens.

United made little headway trying to get an equaliser but they caught a break when Marcelino Núñez lost his footing and Matheus Cunha expertly picked out Fernandes who scored a sensational strike to draw the home side level just before half-time.

Just before the whistle, Lisandro Martinez tried his luck from distance but his effort flew over the crossbar.

Second half

Julio Enciso continued to give United problems when he spun the United midfield and shot an effort just over the bar.

United plunged forward and good combination play by Diogo Dalot and Fernandes released Mbeumo but he failed to take advantage.

The Red Devils thought they had taken the lead when Dalot’s deep cross was brilliantly returned by Rashford but Mbeumo somehow managed to hit the crossbar from one yard out in a stunning miss.

The home side kept up the pressure in front of the Stretford End and Youri Tielemans’ shot was easily stopped by the keeper.

United kept pushing and Harry Maguire’s wild shot was turned into his own net by Jacob Greaves. There was a VAR check but the officials decided to award the goal much to the delight of the Stretford End.

Michael Carrick’s side woke up and Kobbie Maine’s brilliant play in the middle of the park resulted in him playing Cunha who was fouled by the last man. Penalty but no red card. Up stepped Bruno and he stuck his penalty away to give United a two goal lead.

United were purring now and a deep cross by Dalot was volleyed by an unmarked Rashford but he was denied by a smart save.

There is no player more popular around Old Trafford than their Portuguese captain and he consolidated his popularity even more with his third goal.

Maine’s deflected shot was sent out to Mbeumo whose shot was blocked into the path of Fernandes who controlled and finished wonderfully to send the Old Trafford crowd into raptures.

Moments later from the kick off, he almost scored his best ever goal as he shot from the halfway line but it nestled just onto the top of the goal.

On 77 minutes Rashford was played in by a great ball from Martinez but he could not wiggle away from the Ipswich defence before the ball broke to Cunha whose effort was well denied.

United got their fifth when Fernandes played in Mbeumo with a stunning pass over his shoulder and Mbeumo ran onto it and lobbed the keeper. The ball just bounced onto the bar and spun over the line to give the Cameroonian a much needed goal.

Lisandro Martinez gave the ball away under little pressure on the touchline and Chuba Akpom slid into an unguarded net to make it 5-2.

United almost grabbed their sixth on the counter when Dorgu smashed the ball into the top corner but it was well stopped by Ipswich’s giant keeper.

The full time whistle blew and United secured their first three points of the new season.
