A free fan zone will take over Keel Square in Sunderland on Wednesday as England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, with the eight pm BST kick-off in Atlanta screened live for all ages.
According to Sunderland Echo, supporters are urged to arrive early, with pre-match build-up from seven pm. Seating is limited, and food and drinks can be bought from businesses around the square.
The latest local forecast for Wednesday points to highs of 19 degrees, sunny intervals and a light breeze.
Sunderland City Council leader Chris Eynon welcomed the chance to bring people together for an exciting semi-final and underlined the community atmosphere these events create, adding that the city hopes for another memorable evening in the centre.
Other large fan zones include Stack Seaburn, The Saltgrass in Deptford and The Fire Station, with the latter already sold out for Wednesday. Many big pubs are also screening England matches.
Sunderland BID’s Sharon Appleby said the World Cup is lifting the nation’s morale and giving a welcome boost to pubs, bars and the wider local economy, and she hoped fans can gather at Keel Square on Wednesday to, hopefully, watch England beat Argentina.
