SC Freiburg got back to winning ways in the Bundesliga this afternoon with an impressive and well-deserved 2-1 win over 1.FC Union Berlin to kickstart Sunday's action.
The Breisgauers showed early signs of their intent when Vincenzo Grifo found Jan-Niklas Beste in the box, however his effort fizzed past Nikola Vasilj's post.
St.Pauli's Bosnian goalkeeper was eventually tested on the half-hour mark. This time, Matthias Ginter fed Yuito Suzuki who got his shot on target but Vasilj was alive to the danger.
But the Japanese attacker was not to be deterred and eventually made it 1-0. He was first to Vasilj's punch from the corner and punished from an unmarked position in the box.
It took five second-half minutes for Julian Schuster's men to double their advantage. Once again, Vasilj didn't cover himself in glory, parrying Beste's cross into Maxi Eggestein's path for a close range finish.
St.Pauli looked rather blunt in attack but they managed to pull a goal back on 69 minutes. Connor Metcalfe unselfishly fed Louis Oppie on the left who managed to squeeze his shot inside the near post beyond Atubolu.
Alexander Blessin's side made changes and had a late chance when Sinani found Irvine, but the Australian's effort deflected wide allowing Freiburg to climb into tenth place, with St.Pauli stuck in the playoff spot.
