Freiburg to meet Motherwell in UEFA Conference League play-offs | OneFootball

SC Freiburg will face Scottish side Motherwell in a two-legged tie that will decide the team entering the UEFA Conference League league phase. After a 1-1 draw with HIK in Finland, Motherwell won the return leg of the third qualifying round tie with Ibrahim Said’s second-half brace.

The Nigerian striker also netted the late winner when Alfred Johansson’s side started their Scottish Premiership season with a 2-1 victory over Hibernian. Motherwell ended their first home league game of the season goalless with Falkirk on Sunday.

Thursday’s win over HIK has now put them within two games of reaching the group stage (league phase) of European competition for the very first time. Motherwell finished fourth in the Premiership last term.

Freiburg lost the Europa League final to Aston Villa, but they did qualify for Europe via their seventh-placed finish in Bundesliga. They will start their season with this tie as the first leg will be played at Fir Park next week. Julian Schuster’s side will host the return leg the following Thursday.
