According to L'Équipe, the French Football Federation will display a portrait of Christophe Gleizes on the facade of its Paris headquarters next Wednesday. The move supports the French journalist, who has been sentenced on appeal to seven years in prison in Algeria.
The following evening, the federation will convene his support committee at its HQ. Gleizes, a contributor to So Foot and Society, has been held since June after travelling to Algeria for a report on local football.
The FFF will also use the Coupe de France 32es de finale on 19, 20 and 21 December to reiterate its backing and call for his release via stadium announcers and the competition’s broadcasters.
Gleizes was arrested in May 2024 in Algeria over an article about the country’s most decorated club, Jeunesse sportive de Kabylie (JSK), based in Tizi-Ouzou, 100 km east of Algiers.
The Tizi-Ouzou Court of Appeal last week upheld his seven-year sentence for advocating terrorism. France said it deeply regretted the verdict, via the foreign ministry’s spokesperson.
