Long-term Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong looks set to finally commit to a decision on his future.

United interest

The Dutchman was subject to heavy interest from Man United back in the summer of 2022.

The Red Devils even went as far to agree a fee of €85 million with FC Barcelona for the midfielder with Erik ten Hag pushing the move for his former player.

Nonetheless, De Jong never ended up at Old Trafford as he never signalled his willingness to leave the Camp Nou.

Links away

The midfielder has continued to be an important player in Catalonia but that has not stopped with frequent media links away from the club with United and Tottenham Hotspur frequently mentioned as potential destinations.

Finally, there seems to be some clarity in the Netherlands’ international’s future.

New deal

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo report that “negotiations with De Jong and his new agent are well underway and the parties are already in agreement on various aspects of the new contract.”

What’s more, “Barça is offering Frenkie three more seasons in addition to the current one. In those three seasons, he has been offered less than he currently earns, although this year he has higher earnings due to salary deferrals made because of Covid.”

Sources close to the negotiation confirm that De Jong is happy with the amount being offered by Barcelona and is “fully committed” to continuing at the club.

In addition, “the club feels the same way, with Joan Laporta, Deco, and Hansi Flick all in favour of extending his contract because he is a key player for the German coach.”

The agreement comes after many months of meetings between sporting director Deco and the player with only minor details still to iron out before the former Ajax man commits his future to FC Barcelona once and for all.

United are still very much on the hunt for new midfielders but are focusing on younger targets such as Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
