Freya Godfrey has discussed how excited she was to be called up to the England squad by Sarina Wiegman for a first time this month.
The London City Lionesses star earned her first international call-up for England’s final camp of the year.
With England ravaged by injuries, Freya Godfrey has been given a huge chance for the Lionesses.
Sarina Wiegman has already sung the praises of Godfrey who she believes will add ‘something different’ to the squad.
The 20-year-old spoke about how she was called up ahead of a potential international debut this weekend.
“I was in my car driving to see my brother who is at uni.” She said. “I haven’t seen him for a few months, so I was really excited to see him and then Sarina rang me and I was obviously over the moon.
“I rung my parents and said, ‘I’ve got to go – I’m at my brother’s’, I got out the car and told him straight away. It was really nice to have that moment with him where I hadn’t seen him in a while and that was the first thing I could say to him.”
It is sure to be an emotional first camp for Godfrey, but she is eager to learn from the best during the break.
“I think just soaking up as much as I can, learning from the incredible players that are around me,” she explained.
“It’ll be good to be in this environment and learn from English legends who I’ve looked up to for a long time. To be around them and Sarina and all her staff, it’s an incredible opportunity that I’m going to take as much from as I can.”
Although she spent two years with Arsenal, Freya Godfrey only made two appearances for the Gunners.
The English youngster is set to reunite with former teammates at the England camp such as Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Beth Mead.
Godfrey played on loan at London City last season and made her move permanent in the summer after a successful spell.
This season the talented youngster suffered an injury setback at the start of the campaign and she only returned to action in October.
Since returning Godfrey has been impressive – with her performances in November earning her a player of the month nomination.
It is unlikely that Godfrey will start for the Lionesses in either of their final Homecoming Tour fixtures, however she is expected to make her debut against China or Ghana.
