Victor Froholdt will miss Porto’s home game against Manchester City on Tuesday after suffering a concussion against Moreirense.

According to O Jogo, that tie is the opening round of the Champions League league phase, and the midfielder’s involvement against Casa Pia on Saturday is in doubt.

He has not suffered a serious injury, but UEFA and FIFA concussion protocols enforce a six-day break from competition. He is due to be discharged on Saturday morning and will need a few days before resuming full training.

The return-to-play pathway comprises six 24-hour steps, from rest and light aerobic work to football-specific drills without contact, intensified training without contact, then contact training and final clearance.

Under the protocol, the team doctor must inform UEFA in writing that each stage has been completed and that the player is fit before he can train or play.

A return for the 20 September meeting with Benfica appears more likely if recovery progresses as planned.
