From a €40m Chelsea target to priceless for Barcelona: Fermin Lopez unlocks another level | OneFootball

There was a point in the summer of 2025 when Chelsea believed around €40 million could be enough to tempt FC Barcelona into selling Fermin Lopez.

Just over a year later, that figure feels almost detached from reality.

Not simply because Fermin has become more productive, but because the player returning from a difficult summer appears to have added another dimension, and another level, to his game.

A difficult summer followed by a perfect response

This summer was not about transfer uncertainty for Fermin. It was about disappointment.

A metatarsal fracture late last season ultimately cost him the opportunity to represent Spain at the 2026 World Cup.

For a player whose trajectory had been moving relentlessly upwards, watching the biggest tournament in football from the outside was a significant setback.

Going on to see his team-mates lift the coveted trophy could have dampened Fermin’s spirits, but his response has been emphatic.

The La Masia graduate has started the new season with four goals and two assists from Barcelona’s opening four matches.

The latest statement came at Mestalla, where he produced a goal and two assists as Hansi Flick’s side demolished Valencia 5-0.

However, the numbers explain only a fraction of what looks different.

Fermin has always possessed qualities that are difficult to coach. His timing when attacking the box is exceptional. He presses as though every loose ball belongs to him. He plays with aggression, courage and an almost striker-like hunger for goals.

The most important change now is that the football surrounding all these attributes looks increasingly polished.

Fermin is becoming much more than a goalscoring midfielder

At Valencia, it was not simply about Fermin arriving to finish chances. He was creating them. On another day, he could have walked away from Mestalla with five assists to his name.

He combined better with his teammates, his awareness around the penalty area looked sharper and his final pass seemed more decisive.

The chaotic energy that has always defined his football began to look more controlled. That is potentially enormous for Barça.

Flick already has midfielders capable of controlling possession and dictating rhythm. Fermin offers something fundamentally different. He attacks spaces.

If he can combine that movement and scoring instinct with consistent chance creation, Barcelona suddenly have one of Europe’s most complete attacking midfield profiles.

Even Flick’s praise after Mestalla came with a reminder that there are still mistakes to remove from his game.

Perhaps that is the most frightening aspect of all. Fermin is already at such a high level, but he still remains some way from being a finished product.

Remember that €40 million Chelsea interest?

Which brings us back to Chelsea. When the Premier League club showed serious interest in 2025, figures around €40 million were discussed. Barcelona resisted, and Fermin stayed.

What would that conversation look like today? €60 million? €80 million? €100 million? €120 million?

There is no objective answer, and four excellent league matches should not suddenly triple anyone’s valuation.

However, if Morgan Rogers commands a €120 million-plus fee in this market, there is no doubt that Fermin should also be somewhere in that ballpark.

Barça, though, do not need to worry about how much Fermin is worth. Replacing him would be remarkably difficult.

Plenty of midfielders can pass more elegantly. Others might control games better. Very few create as much good chaos as Fermin does, though.

This is ultimately why Fermin’s development matters more than whatever theoretical transfer fee could now be attached to him.

Barcelona spent years in a financial position where almost every player eventually became part of a valuation discussion.

Fermin is making a strong case to escape that category entirely. The player Chelsea valued at around €40 million in 2025 is not the player Barcelona are watching now.

A painful summer could have interrupted his momentum. Instead, he has returned looking faster in thought, more decisive with the ball and even more dangerous around goal.

Perhaps Fermin has not merely started the season in great form. Barcelona may be watching him unlock the next level of his career.
