From doom to boom, Daniel Farke reshapes Leeds United’s season and standing

Daniel Farke has altered the mood around Leeds United and himself, turning a faltering autumn into a compelling revival. Leeds Live notes that he set out to shed the falling apart tag after a first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years, and he feels progress has been made.

November left him on the brink, three defeats on the spin within five losses in six and a slide into the bottom three before Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Villa boos and talk of a two game ultimatum added heat, then City scored inside a minute.

Two down at half-time, he delivered the team talk of his tenure and changed course. Jaka Bijol and Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on and a back three was adopted. Leeds hit 2-2 before Phil Foden’s late winner.

He kept the shape for Chelsea and won 3-1, then resilience at Liverpool underlined a new steel. A seven-game unbeaten run followed, including 1-1 with Manchester United and 0-0 at Liverpool on New Year’s Day. An eight million pound signing, James Justin impressed, and Calvert-Lewin scored six in five in December.

It has not all been smooth, Facundo Buonanotte has underwhelmed and the chase for Jorgen Strand Larsen failed. A 4-3 reverse at Newcastle and 4-0 at Arsenal stung, chances slipped at home to Manchester City and Sunderland nicked a 1-0 at Elland Road. There have been 11 concessions after 90 minutes.

Even so, Leeds are holding leads better and sit on 40 points. Farke has broken ground, adding last season’s Championship record haul and a first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years, and unbeaten meetings with Chelsea.

With rivals changing managers, he has steadied a listing ship and earned chants that once eluded him. His deal runs to 2027, renewal talks are due in summer and will not hinge on the FA Cup. He already has silverware and, if he reaches the final, folklore beckons, though many may already call this a success since Marcelo Bielsa.
