From ecstasy to misery: Alexandre Lacazette bids farewell to Europe for last time with Lyon

It was a night of emotional highs and lows for Alexandre Lacazette (33). Coming off the bench, the Olympique Lyonnais captain netted the penalty that sent his side 4-2 up on the night with just over 10 minutes to play at Old Trafford. However, Manchester United came roaring back, netting three goals in just seven minutes, blowing Lyon away and securing their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

At full-time, after OL’s late collapse, Lacazette was in tears on the pitch, an image in stark contrast to the scenes of jubilation just moments earlier. It was almost certainly Lacazette’s final game for Lyon in Europe. The Frenchman’s contract is up at the end of the season and it is almost certain that there will be no renewal.

He, like the rest of the Lyon squad, will have to be re-mobilised. Paulo Fonseca is confident that his captain can be counted on in the final sprint in Ligue 1. “Alex has a lot of experience,” began the Lyon manager in a post-match press conference attended by Get French Football News.

He added, “I don’t know what will happen with him at the end of the season but he is experienced and knows what he has to do between now and the end of the season in order to be important to us. I am calm about that.”
