Manchester City supporters have been greeted by a significant boost to their hopes of seeing Ederson as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper next season.

The Brazilian’s future at the Etihad Stadium has been thrown into significant doubt since the end of last season, amid a belief that the 30-year-old would be open to a change of direction in his career and the challenge of Saudi Arabian football as his next step.

That stance opened up Manchester City to the prospect of big-money proposals from the Middle-Eastern league, with Al Nassr tipped to be the most strongly interested party in Pep Guardiola’s mainstay goalkeeper since the summer of 2017.

However, despite City taking the position of being open to a sale for the right amount, an opening proposal fell significantly short of their own internal valuations of the shot-stopping number one, and as such there has now been a significant update on proceedings.

According to the information of transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Al Nassr and Manchester City for Ederson are currently off after a €30 million proposal was rejected by the Premier League champions and a €60 million request made.

It is further revealed that Al Nassr have now turned their attentions to Athletico Paranaense and Brazil international goalkeeper Bento, who has emerged as ‘one of the main names on their shortlist’ with talks underway.

While talks had been ongoing, Manchester City were already bracing themselves for life without Ederson, by ensuring the longer-term future of Stefan Ortega Moreno via a contract extension until the summer of 2026.

The understanding in various quarters was that the German would have been promoted into the number one slot at Manchester City, had a deal for Ederson been sanctioned, leaving the club to seek a new back-up choice complimenting Ortega in cup competitions.

However, with all signs now pointing towards a stay at the Etihad Stadium for Ederson, and the player himself back in first-team training as normal at the City Football Academy this week, it makes life much easier for those in squad planning and recruitment roles this summer.
