Manchester City and Liverpool could be set to go head-to-head once again this summer, but this time in the chase for one of French football’s best rising stars.

The two Premier League giants once again ensured this season that the Premier League title would remain in the north-west of England, with the last winner of the division outside of the region coming in the 2016/17 campaign.

Unfortunately for City, Pep Guardiola and his players were unable to put up too much of a fight for the crown having won all of the last four honours, leaving Arne Slot’s impressive Anfield squad with a clear run at the trophy, winning the title with four games to spare.

As such, there is a clear intention from within the Etihad Stadium to put together a strong enough rebuild this summer to bring Manchester City’s squad back up to its competitive best, with investment having already started in the winter market.

At the forefront of those plans will be the incoming director of football Hugo Viana, who is due to replace Txiki Begiristain this summer after the long-standing official at Manchester City announced last Autumn that this would be his 12th and final season with the club.

Plans from the side of Viana are expected to take up various forms as the club will no doubt look to bring in ready-made talent to maintain Manchester City’s position at the top of the game, but also invest in the future.

And now, according to the information of L’Equipe – as translated and relayed by Get French Football News – all of Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Bayer Leverkusen have made enquiries for AS Monaco talent, Eliesse Ben Seghir in recent months.

It is claimed that the plan from the French side was not to sell the 20-year-old this summer, however an exit cannot be ruled out for the forward with a current estimated transfer valuation of around €30 million.

There is said to be a source of frustration for the player through a lack of consistent opportunities and as such the player does not feel sufficiently ‘considered’ by his current manager, Adi Hütter.

For now it remains to be seen just how much further Manchester City’s basic interest in the player extends, and whether they deem the talent worthy enough of a serious pursuit against some of the biggest competitors in European football.

The main focus of the club is expected to lie in the goalkeeper and midfield ranks amid growing uncertainty over the future of Ederson, as well as the already-confirmed exit of Kevin De Bruyne after the ongoing season.

The current understanding is that Manchester City will pursue a move for FC Porto and Portugal’s Diogo Costa, while Bayer Leverkusen and Germany’s Florian Wirtz is the number one target in the attacking midfield ranks.
