From goal scorer to provider: Former Rangers striker enjoying best creative season with FC Twente

Sam Lammers is having another strong season with FC Twente. The former Rangers striker has scored six goals in 25 games so far this season, but in recent weeks it has been his ability to create for his teammates that has stood out. In his past three appearances for Twente, Lammers has dished out five assists, giving him seven for the season. That is a career best for Lammers in terms of assists, with his previous season high being five back when he played for Heerenveen during the 2018/2019 season.
The 28-year-old joined FC Twente during the summer transfer window of 2024, having left Rangers to return to Dutch football. Lammers had struggled to find success since the afrementoined loan spell with Heerenveen a number of years ago now. During that campaign Lammers announced himself as a top Eredivisie prospect with 19 goals in 35 games.
Italian side Atalanta signed him from PSV the following summer, but Lammers only scored two goals in 19 games for the Bergamo based side. That was the same amount of goals he scored while on loan with Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2021/2022 season. Loans to Empoli and Sampdoria followed, but Lammers continued to struggle outside of the Netherlands. Scottish giants Rangers took a chance on him in 2023, but again the striker could only muster two goals in 31 games.
During the 2023/2024 season he returned to the Netherlands with FC Utrecht and immediately rediscovered his scoring form. Lammers fired in 11 goals in just 20 games, alongside three assists, and earned a move to his current side FC Twente. Since joining the side Lammers has scored 15 goals in 56 games, while also providing eight assists.
Twente are one of the inform sides in the Eredivisie at the moment and have given themselves a chance of finishing second. Their attack has been effective, with Lammers joined by the likes of Kristian Hlynsson, Daan Rots and Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Lammers leads the side with his seven assist, while Norwegian youngster Sondre Ørjasæter is just behind on six.
In the summer, former Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag will take over as Sporting Director. He will certainly be enjoying what he is seeing from the side at the back end of the Eredivisie season.
