Renato Gaúcho completes his first month as Vasco head coach on Sunday, lifting the side off the bottom of the Brasileiro with a tactical reset and midfielders stepping up.

According to Globo.com, he replaced Fernando Diniz and, on debut on 12 March, switched to a system with three defensive midfielders.

Those midfielders were given licence to attack, with Thiago Mendes scoring three in this spell, Barros two and Tchê Tchê one.

That reset preceded a five-match unbeaten run, featuring wins over Palmeiras, Fluminense and Grêmio. The first defeat came in a clássico, a 2-1 loss to Botafogo in the 10th round at São Januário. After that defeat, a comment about Marino Hinestroza’s difficulties sparked controversy, making headlines across South America and on social media.

Since then, Vasco have gone three games without a win. Across eight matches under him, the record is three wins, four draws and one defeat.

Vasco are still without an away win in the Brasileiro and have been pegged back by late goals under him. The Remo game made it three consecutive away draws, after stalemates at Cruzeiro and Coritiba as visitors.
