From Saint-Fons to France’s bench with Zidane, David Bettoni has come of age | OneFootball

As France begin the Zidane era in Türkiye, attention turns to his assistant and long-time friend David Bettoni.

Le Progres notes that the new staff are opening a fresh chapter, and Lyonnais might find more grace under them.

After 14 years under Didier Deschamps, whose reluctance to call Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso while they were in form annoyed some, Zidane’s first list carries a hint of '6-9'.

Rayan Cherki and Bradley Barcola are included, as is striker Esteban Lepaul, developed at OL. They have also convinced Bettoni, the head coach’s steadfast ally for more than 35 years.

Born in Saint-Priest in 1971, to a family who fled fascist Italy, Bettoni grew up with two older sisters and his parents in a house in Saint-Fons at the foot of the Clochettes district. He was quickly hooked on football.

A product of the same AS Cannes education as Zidane, he is viewed as a perfect complement to the former No 10 by his friend and former ASPTT Lyon coach Vincent Cabin.
