Philippe Coutinho’s second spell at Vasco has ended after one and a half years, the playmaker requesting to terminate his deal and stepping away from the team. He cited being mentally tired.
He made 81 appearances, scoring 17 goals with seven assists. In 2025 he played 56 matches, a single season career high, as Vasco finished Copa do Brasil runners up.
Coutinho returned in July 2024 to a rousing reception, 20,000 fans greeting him at São Januário. He joined on loan from Aston Villa, alongside Souza and Alex Teixeira.
His debut was a 2-0 loss at Atlético-MG in the 18th round, with injuries interrupting 2024. He scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw with Flamengo at the Maracanã and ended the year with 18 games, 10 starts.
In 2025 he enjoyed sustained fitness and minutes, totalling 56 appearances. Rayan and Vegetti were the scorers, while Coutinho played a steady role across the campaign.
This year began with a goal and assist against Maricá. Results then dipped, he was booed against Bahia and more loudly against Volta Redonda, where he left at half-time with Vasco 1-0 down and did not return. The player said in a social media post that his cycle felt over at the interval and he stepped aside to safeguard his mental health.
His contract ran to 30 June and renewal talks had started with a view to ending his career at the club, but both parties have now agreed to rescind.
