Former Portugal international Hugo Porfírio, once of Sporting and Benfica, is now driving for Uber, a twist that has surprised supporters.
According to Glorioso 1904, he is said to have been recognised at the wheel by two young passengers, an episode that quickly drew curiosity.
His Benfica spell began in 1998/99 after a breakout year at Racing Santander, where he made 23 appearances with two goals and three assists. Loaned to Nottingham Forest, he played nine games, scored once and set up two, then returned to the Luz.
In 1999/00 he played six matches for Benfica, scoring once and adding two assists. The following season he joined Marítimo on loan, featuring in 21 games with two goals and one assist. In 2001/02 he made six Benfica appearances, then turned out for Benfica B across 2002/03 and 2003/04 before moving to Oriental in 2006/07.
Porfírio came through at Sporting, debuting in 1992/93 with two senior outings, then playing 13 games and scoring once the following season. Loans to Tirsense and União de Leiria preceded West Ham, where he recorded 27 appearances, four goals and three assists. He ended his playing days at Al-Nassr in 2007/08.
He later returned to Sporting to work on the coaching staffs of Ricardo Sá Pinto and Oceano. Now away from the professional game and without active social media, the Uber episode is one of the few public glimpses into his life.
