Portuguese authorities have opened investigation after Vinicius Junior reported racist abuse during Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Benfica.

Racism claim during Champions League playoff

The controversy from Champions League playoff match between Real Madrid & Benfica continues to grow after alleged racist incident involving Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian winger accused Prestiani of directing racist abuse at him during first-leg tie of the round of 16 playoff played on Tuesday at Estádio da Luz.

The incident reportedly happened shortly after Vinicius scored for Real Madrid. Television cameras showed the Benfica player covering his mouth while speaking after which Vinicius reacted strongly and alerted the referee.

Match stopped as tensions rise

Following Vinicius’ complaint, the referee temporarily stopped the match for around ten minute to calm the situation and speak with officials.

The pause added to the tension in already heated European night.

Spanish newspaper AS reported that the case has now gone beyond football authorities, with Portugal’s government becoming directly involved.

Government body opens administrative case

Portugal’s authority for the Prevention and Combat of Violence in Sport (APCVD) confirmed that it has launched administrative disciplinary procedures to determine whether racist offense took place.

In statement published on its official website, the body said it had acted after media reports claimed that Vinicius Junior had been subjected to racist insults during competition organized by UEFA.

The investigation will assess the facts and decide whether further action or sanctions are required.

UEFA also investigating

UEFA had already confirmed earlier that it would open its own investigation into the alleged incident.

This means the case could lead to consequences at both national and European levels depending on the findings.

Vinicius has previously spoken out strongly against racism in football and the incident has again sparked debate about player protection and zero tolerance policies in European competitions.
