From Wembley to Jeju: One Bayern fan's dream in South Korea | OneFootball

FC Bayern fans travel from all over the world to support their team at away matches – even if they have to travel hundreds of kilometres on the Autobahn or by rail, across oceans and deserts. We want to get to know those who spare no effort or expense to see their beloved Bayern away from the Allianz Arena a little better: our away fans with their special stories, their love and their passion for FC Bayern.

The sun is beating down on the World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo, just a few hundred metres away from the Pacific Ocean. It’s over 30 degrees in the fan zone on Jeju Island, the humidity is high, but the atmosphere is buoyant. Red and white shirts, scarves and flags mix with the orange colours of local club Jeju SK FC, a partner club in the joint venture Red&Gold. In the middle of it is Lee Kyung Su, 29, and his girlfriend Ga-eun, 22. In less than two hours, FC Bayern will play a friendly against Jeju SK as part of the Audi Summer Tour, before the German double winners travel on to Hong Kong – they play Aston Villa there on Friday before the trip back to Munich. The away section on Jeju already shows how big the record champions’ fan base in South Korea is: massive.

Lee fell in love with FC Bayern in one of the greatest moments in the club’s history: the 2012/13 Champions League final. The legendary winning goal from Arjen Robben to make it 2-1 at Wembley Stadium was the first football match he watched live, and the start of a passion that’s endured to this day – 8,910 kilometres from Munich. “I’ve been a Bayern fan for 14 years now,” he says with a smile. “That final was the first football match I ever watched – and I was so impressed and moved that I decided to become a Bayern fan.” Since then, Lee has immersed himself in the fan culture. Stadium atmosphere, chants, club songs – for him, the heart of the club is tangible, even on the other side of the world, on an island in the Pacific Ocean. “The most attractive thing about Bayern Munich for me is the fan culture and the way they support the team. I’m really interested in the atmosphere in the stadium and the chants of the fans, and I’m always trying to learn the songs by heart,” explains Lee. His long-time favourite player was Thomas Müller, but Harry Kane is his current favourite. Incidentally, Lee is not a fan of Jeju SK, despite them representing his home – FC Bayern are the only team for him.

His girlfriend Ga-eun admits that she’s not really a football fan, but she's happy to let her partner's enthusiasm rub off on her, and has even put on one of his older Bayern jerseys. “Through Lee Kyung Su, I’ve gradually started to take more and more of an interest in Bayern,” she says. “When I heard Bayern were holding a match here, I came to Jeju to watch the match live with him.”

As FC Bayern take the next step on their 2026 Audi Summer Tour and pre-season preparations in Jeju, Lee and Ga-eun are part of a scene that defines the club: fans who embody the ‘Mia san mia’ spirit across continents – and for whom a hot evening in South Korea is just as unforgettable as a historic European night at Wembley.
