Groningen will be without striker Brynjólfur Willumsson against FC Utrecht on Sunday. The Eredivisie’s top scorer has returned from the international break with an injury. It’s still unclear how long Groningen will be without the Icelandic striker.
This bad news arrives and puts a damper on Groningen reaching a significant milestone during this international break. Under head coach Dick Lukkien, more first-team players were called up to a national (youth) team than ever before (eight).
“That speaks volumes about the talent we have in our current squad, but it also costs us something. Willumsson and Elvis van der Laan have returned to Groningen with injuries,” Lukkien explained on the Groningen club website.
It’s a huge blow for Groningen, as they’ll be without their league top scorer during their reunion with former manager Ron Jans. Willumsson has already scored five times in the first four matches of the season. The Icelander scored twice during the Northern Derby against SC Heerenveen, as well as in the encounter against Heracles Almelo. Willumsson also scored a goal in the away match against PSV.
Besides Willumsson and Van der Laan, Noam Emeran is also missing from the Groningen squad. New signing Travis Hernes, who arrived on loan from Newcastle United on Deadline Day, is eligible to play and could get some minutes.
