FSG pull the plug on late record-breaking deal

Liverpool made just a single sale during the summer transfer window.

Curtis Jones' £30million move to Inter was the only money the Reds banked, giving them one of the highest net spends in the Premier League. It would've been easy for the 2024/25 Premier League champions to look to rack up some sales late on in an attempt to balance the books.

Yet FSG, the current owners with the majority stake in the club, made the bold decision to turn down what was a record-breaking offer late in the window to keep one of the club's highest earners.

Liverpool reject £80million bid for Cody Gakpo

According to a TEAMTALK report, FSG essentially pulled ranked, pulling the plug on Cody Gakpo's potential move to Manchester City.

The report claims that the Liverpool owners reached a unanimous verdict that the No18 was not for sale at any cost. The club firmly communicated they had “no intention of allowing the Netherlands international to leave” and were in no hurry to cash in on the 27-year-old forward despite wanting to add Yankuba Minteh to their ranks as the transfer window edged towards its closure.

FSG intervene in Cody Gakpo transfer

This news comes as a bit of a surprise. FSG aren't famed for their hands on approach, operating a self sustainable model and letting the right guys make the right decisions. The fact the report specifically names FSG, and not Richard Hughes, as the reason Gakpo remains at Liverpool is interesting.

Had they not gotten involved, would Liverpool have cashed in for a record fee and reinvested it before the deadline? The current record for the transfer of a Dutch player is Frenkie De Jong when he moved to Barcelona. The rumoured £80million fee for Gakpo would've eclipsed it.

It is an intriguing time at Anfield with FSG vetoing sales and new owner Amit Bhatia getting involved in the Bradley Barcola signing, the waters appear to be a little muddied with regards to who is running the show.
