According to Sunderland Echo, Fulham have named former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach on a three-year deal, succeeding Marco Silva.

Silva left for Benfica after his contract expired, ending a successful spell in west London. Fulham were the only team to complete a Premier League double over Sunderland last season, sharpening interest on Wearside.

Arbeloa enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Real Madrid, Liverpool and West Ham United. He made 98 appearances for Liverpool before returning to Madrid, where he collected major honours.

The 43-year-old has since moved into coaching and was working at Real Madrid until May. He now takes charge at Craven Cottage as Fulham move quickly to replace Silva.

After confirmation, Arbeloa said it was an honour to start at Fulham, the oldest club in London. He thanked Shahid Khan and Tony Khan for their trust, looked forward to the Craven Cottage atmosphere and to beginning pre-season with the players next week, and said he was sure they would enjoy an incredible journey together.
