Chelsea’s win over Legia Warsaw tonight wasn’t very memorable, in fact we think only two things will stick in the mind – the awesome atmosphere generated by the home fans in Poland, and Tyrique George scoring his first senior goal.
We were so delighted for young Ty, who was on his toes and ready to sniff out the rebound from Reece James’ shot which the goalkeeper spilled. But he was about more than just the goal. In a very dull first half he was the Blues’ only bright spark, and he did just what we needed to see from more of the players on his side – being brave, making runs in behind, taking players on.
The goal was just reward for those efforts.
Speaking at half time on TNT Sport, former Chelsea winger Joe Cole was very positive about the teenager’s impact.

“In what’s been an indifferent season for the club, a season of transition, he’s a real bright spark. He’s played in these [Conference League] games and we saw it with West Ham a few years ago with the emergence of young players, and George has taken these opportunities,” Cole said.
“He’s been direct. He’s affected the games, he’s a dribbler, he’s every full back’s nightmare because he just goes at players and makes things happen. The fans have been calling for him to start more Premier League games.
Bear in mind, he said all this before George’s goal.
We’re so happy for the academy kid, and we really hope he gets another chance in the first team soon. This was his 5th start in a row in the competition, and it would be brutal to drop him from the lineup after this.
