John Stones missed Manchester City’s 3-nil win over Sunderland on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. Pep Guardiola revealed after his team’s dominant win at the Etihad that the England international had sustained an injury in the lead-up to last weekend’s Premier League fixture. Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League league phase fixture against Real Madrid, Pep Guardiola has revealed more details on the injury that John Stones has suffered. But no timeline has been revealed for how long the centre-back will be sidelined for.
Pep Guardiola was asked during his pre-game press conference ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu if John Stones would be available for Wednesday night’s match. The Manchester City manager revealed that Stones has suffered a leg injury but Guardiola also revealed that he was unsure how long Stones would be sidelined for. Speaking about Stone’s injury, Pep Guardiola said: “Leg. I don’t know yet how long he will be out“.

It is a blow for Manchester City to lose John Stones for a period of time. The England international has been predominantly a squad player for Pep Guardiola’s side this season. Despite this, the way Stones plays the centre-back position does give Pep Guardiola a different option to employ if needed. The ability of John Stones to drift into midfield from centre-back does strengthen City’s midfield when necessary. Pep Guardiola cannot utilise another centre-back to play that role but City do have depth in their squad at centre-back.
Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are Manchester City’s first-choice centre-back pairing. Nathan Ake and Abdukodir Khusanov can step in when required for the pair. Although neither player can play in a similar fashion to John Stones, they are both more than adequate cover for what Manchester City need at centre-back.
It remains to be seen how long John Stones will be sidelined for die to the leg injury he has suffered. But Manchester City do have cover at centre-back to cover the loss of the England international for an undisclosed period of time.
