Gabigol scored for Santos at São Januário and relished beating Vasco on his first appearance at the ground, leaning into the ‘mulambo’ taunts and reaffirming his Flamengo roots.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the striker said he had not played there with Flamengo, called it an important win that brings confidence, and noted there is another final for his team on Thursday. He added that being called “mulambo” did not bother him, describing it as double happiness, a Flamengo fan winning there and scoring too.

Before kick-off the home crowd targeted him with chants of “ei, Gabigol, vai tomar…” and repeatedly used “mulambo”, a derogatory term Vascaínos often aim at Flamengo supporters.

On 23 minutes of the second half, Rollheiser slipped him through and, as goalkeeper Léo Jardim advanced, Gabigol finished calmly. He then stood still for his celebration, choosing not to provoke the home end.

Against Vasco he now has 24 appearances, with 17 wins, five draws and two defeats. He has scored nine times in those meetings, five of them while playing for Flamengo.
