The STJD’s third Disciplinary Commission has banned Santos forward Gabigol for one match after he made an obscene gesture towards a supporter during the match against Vitória at Vila Belmiro last Saturday, in the 18th round of the Brasileirão.

According to Globo.com, he will serve only one game, probably against Botafogo on 22 July when the Brasileirão resumes after the World Cup.

After scoring Santos’ third goal, he celebrated with fans, then turned towards a critic and grabbed his genitals. VAR official Wagner Reway alerted referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein, who showed a red card after review.

He was charged under article 258 of the CBJD, covering conduct contrary to discipline or sporting ethics. Prosecutor Beatriz Calheta said his influence made the gesture incompatible with the image football should project.

Defence lawyer Marcelo Mendes said he admitted wrongdoing but thought a gesture towards his own fans was not punishable, seeking the minimum penalty converted to a warning. Auditor Rafael Bozzano cited Corinthians cases involving André and Allan, imposing a one-match ban without conversion.

Santos were also punished under article 206 for delaying the restart. The referee noted the team returned two minutes late, so the second half began one minute behind. The prosecution sought R$ 1,000 per minute citing 14 prior delays, but the auditor set a R$ 1,000 fine, backed by the commission.
