Gabriel Gudmundsson has become the first Leeds United player named in a 2026 World Cup squad, a timely lift that indicates his hamstring issue has not jeopardised his World Cup prospects.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Sweden left-back was included in Graham Potter’s 26-man selection on Tuesday night despite missing Leeds’ last two matches.
He sustained a hamstring problem in last month’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea, with Daniel Farke confirming he would miss Burnley and Tottenham. It remains unclear if the 27-year-old will be back for Brighton or West Ham.
Gudmundsson has been a regular under Potter, who took charge of Sweden in October 2025. He played in every World Cup qualifier and started both play-off ties in March.
Sweden qualified by beating Ukraine in the semi-final, then a 3-2 win over Poland. They are in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.
Tunisia await first at three am on June 15 UK time, then the Netherlands on June 20, then Japan five days later. That last match could pit Gudmundsson against Elland Road teammate Ao Tanaka.
The Sweden squad also features Premier League names Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Anthony Elanga.
