Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson missed Sweden training again on Wednesday because of illness, leaving his involvement in Monday’s World Cup opener against Tunisia in doubt.
According to Aftonbladet, the left-back remained absent on Wednesday afternoon. Team press officer Petra Thorén said he was staying at the hotel and in a bad way, that symptoms were mild, and that she would not discuss specifics as she is not the team doctor.
Gudmundsson fell ill earlier in the week and also skipped Tuesday’s session. He had only just returned from a five-week lay-off after a hamstring injury sustained in April’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley.
He is head coach Graham Potter’s preferred option at left wing-back and started both crucial World Cup qualifying play-off games. If he recovers, he would be a likely starter against Tunisia.
Teammate Hjalmar Ekdal said the squad had received little information, adding Gudmundsson was probably in a bad way and isolating as much as he could.
Sweden kick off against Tunisia in Guadalupe, Mexico on June 15, face the Netherlands in Houston, Texas five days later, then meet Ao Tanaka’s Japan in Arlington on June 26.
