Gabriel Gudmundsson has played down fitness concerns after hobbling off during Sweden’s 5-1 World Cup win over Tunisia.
The Leeds United left-back became the first Leeds player to feature at the tournament on Monday morning, after Brenden Aaronson, Noah Okafor and Ao Tanaka stayed on the bench for their countries. Sweden hit five past a dismal Tunisia, who have since sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi. Gudmundsson, who missed sessions through illness last week, was replaced by Elliot Stroud on 66 minutes at Estadio Monterrey after treatment.
“It was quite noticeable to me. It hasn’t been an entirely optimal week for me.” He told Fotbollskanalen.
“But I trained with the team again on Friday and got two good sessions. The circumstances with the weather may have played a small role, but regardless, it felt good.”
“It was dark. It was dark days,” he admitted. “I downloaded a lot of series before we flew to the US, and I managed to burn them all in two or three days. I had to isolate myself, sleep a lot and just take care of my body.”
Gudmundsson had only just returned from a five-week hamstring lay-off before falling ill in the USA, and was a doubt to face Tunisia. He will hope to be involved again when Sweden face the Netherlands in Houston on Saturday evening UK time, then Ao Tanaka’s Japan in Arlington, Texas on 26 June.
