Gunners have never lost in the 45 games in which the Brazilian has scored, a remarkable run that continued against Liverpool at Anfield

Gabriel Martinelli believes Arsenal’s second-half performance at Anfield should fill them with belief that they can finally end their trophy drought next season.

The Gunners were trailing 2-0 against champions Liverpool on Sunday after Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz both struck midway through the first half.

Martinelli was impressed by the comeback and says it will give Arsenal confidence going into next season.

The Gunners once again failed to win a trophy this year, with their last major silverware coming when they lifted the FA Cup back in 2020 during Arteta’s first season in charge.

“We saw what we can do [in the second half at Liverpool],” said Martinelli. “What we did against them in the second half was amazing.

“The effort and everything we did was great. As I said, we wanted to win the game, but in the end, it was not that bad.

“We just take the positive things and go for the next season to try to improve and win trophies.”

The Brazilian scored Arsenal’s opening goal with a header in the 47th minute and the Gunners earning a draw kept up his remarkable record.

Martinelli has now scored in 45 matches for Arsenal and they have never been beaten in any of those games.

“I’ll try to score every single game from now on! I mean, it’s really good to have these stats,” said Martinelli. “I just try to do my best for the team.

“It’s a game I like to play, going in behind and threatening their last line. I think it was a great game. But as I said, we could have done better in the first half, but the boys did a great effort out there.

“Of course, we wanted to win the game. We came here with the mentality to win it.

“At half-time, we talked and we knew that we could do better, and this is what we did. You could see in the beginning of the second half, we scored and then we went for it.”

Arsenal are now in a commanding position when it comes to securing qualification for the Champions League next season.

The Gunners are second in the Premier League and five points clear of Aston Villa in sixth, with a vastly superior goal difference.

A draw at home to Newcastle, who are two points off Arsenal in third, or at relegated Southampton on the final day of the season should be enough to get the job done.

But Arteta has loftier ambitions than that and is determined that the Gunners hold on to second place.

“We cannot be the best so we have to make sure that we are the best of the rest,” said Arteta. “And against Newcastle, we have the opportunity to wrap that up.”
