Gabriel Martinelli is not surprised that his Brazil team-mate, Estevao Willian, has hit the ground running at Chelsea.

Estevao joined Chelsea from Brazilian club Palmeiras in the summer as part of a deal worth an initial fee of £29million.

The 18-year-old has been an instant hit and his goal against Barcelona on Tuesday was his fifth of the season.

Martinelli, who will go head to head with Estevao on Sunday when Arsenal travel to Chelsea, is not shocked by the forward’s performances.

The Arsenal winger knows the teenager as they both play for Brazil, and he isn’t surprised that Estevao is shining in England.

“He’s a nice boy, his family are as well, everyone’s so humble,” said Martinelli. “They deserve everything that they are doing here.

“The boy is so good as well, everyone in the national team loves him as well. He deserves everything that he’s doing - and I just hope he’s not on his day on Sunday!

“In the national team we had some talks, not just me and him, but everyone.

“So we knew before he came how good he is and it’s not a surprise for us because we knew him from Brazil. He deserves everything, so yeah, fair play to him.”

Martinelli is working under Carlo Ancelotti with the Brazilian national side and is enjoying his time with one of football’s greatest managers.

Ancelotti, the former Chelsea boss, will lead Brazil into next year’s World Cup - and Martinelli thinks that he is filling the squad with the belief that they can go all the way.

“It’s so good to have him in the national team,” he said. “He’s won everything in football, so it’s a pleasure to work under him.

“I’m so happy to have the opportunity to work with him in the national team and to have the opportunity to have Mikel [Arteta] here as well.

“I think me and Gabriel and [Gabriel] Jesus, we are lucky to have the opportunity to have them two.

“He [Ancelotti] tries to keep everyone comfortable with the mentality that we cannot just win the games now, we can win the World Cup.

“So it’s good when we are playing and we see him on the touchline. It’s amazing to have him there.”
