Gabriel Muresan, the former Romania midfielder, has died aged 44 after drowning on Wednesday evening. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed his death.

He had served as mayor of Apold since 2020 and won nine caps for the national team.

Muresan enjoyed his greatest success with CFR Cluj, whom he captained. With Cluj he won three Romanian league titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012, plus three Romanian Cups in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

He featured in the Champions League group stage with Cluj in 2008, 2010 and 2012, making 13 appearances in the competition.

The midfielder played professionally from 2004 to 2017. He spent most of his career in Romania, with a season in Russia at FC Tom Tomsk in 2013-2014.
