Gabriel Paulista acknowledged catching Jorginho in the face during Flamengo’s clash with Corinthians, a flashpoint that did not bring a red card. The defender said he apologised after the incident and maintained it was not an elbow.

According to Coluna Do Fla, before a corner he tried to free himself from Jorginho and caught the midfielder on the chin, who fell immediately. Referee Rodrigo Pereira Lima put a hand to his ear to hear his assistants, but play continued without an on-field review.

Also in the first half, Evertton Araújo was sent off after playing the ball before making contact with Breno Bidon, yet the referee produced a red. Corinthians also appealed for a penalty for Ayrton Lucas on André, which was not awarded.

After the match, Paulista said he went straight to the referee, admitted his hand struck Jorginho’s face, denied it was an elbow, accepted responsibility and apologised. He added he believed the VAR did not see it as a dismissal and that both sides could feel aggrieved, but he kept to his view.

Refereeing analyst Paulo Cesar de Oliveira first argued it was not a red. Minutes after full-time, with new angles, he changed his assessment and said Gabriel’s movement merited dismissal.
